Carnation Breakfast Bars

I would guess that these were one of the first attempts at the nutrition bar. This box is from about 1976-7 and has some really groovy graphics on the side panels and check out the bacon as part of the complete breakfast on the front. The three flavors of the boxes I have are Peanut Butter & Granola, Peanut Butter Crunch and Chocolate Crunch.

- try the Power Bar Peanut Butter REDUCED SUGAR.... the right taste and consistency... (at least how I remember the Carnation Bars).

These were my absolute favorite! I could never figure out why they stopped making them. I especially liked the peanutbutter flavor. I can't figure out why they're only making the breakfast drinks. The breakfast bar market is huge! It just doesn't seem very smart. Especially when they had such a loyal following that we are still talking about them after all these years! They really need to put these back on the market.

This is hilarious. I never would've thought that there was anyone else out there that looked for Carnation Breakfast Bars other than my Mom and myself! I ate them growing up in the 80's and early 90's(I think). I see a lot of comments about them being dry and crunchy. But I remember them being moist(but not to moist). They were great! They are still the only thing that I want to eat for breakfast. I have not found anything that I enjoy eating for breakfast since they stopped making them. Instead I turn to chocolate bars. I ask Nestle is this better for me than one of their breakfast bars? I think not. Seeing how many people crave them it makes me wonder-did they contain some kind of addictive ingredient that Nestle doesn't want us to know about and that's why they took them off the market? Sure does make you think when they won't reproduce them doesn't it? Good luck to all of my fellow breakfast bar lovers. If we don't ever get any again here on earth, maybe we will find some in heaven!

My entire family loved these bars. We always had them in the house and took them on every trip. My father was in the military and when we were stationed in England all my British friends loved to eat them at our house. I just got back in contact with one of my British friends and she asked me if they still had the breakfast bars in the states. That is love of a product! She had not had one since we left England 25 years ago and she was still remembering how good they were.

Wow. I'm not alone. I've craved my Carnation Bars for so long! Amazing there are others out there. We should form a support group.

I LOVED these bars! I can still remember what they taste like. There is absolutely nothing out there that comes close. If Carnation doesn't want to make them anymore another company should, because they would makes lots of $$$$.

Here's a Facebook group: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=39790505937 (only 63 members - sheesh!!)

If Nestle is going for nutrition, then the breakfast bar fits right in. It was packed with protein and vitamins and carbohydrates. I brought loads of them on my backpacking trips in the 80's.

I quite like the powdered drink mix, but it' apples and oranges comparing it to the bars.

Anonymous said...

Yes! I too loved and miss the Carnation Breakfast Bars. I used to eat these after school and I too could have eaten a whole box at once! I remember the package - the very same picture with the '70s people eating the bars, especially the little girl with her lunch box. What I liked most about them is what I can best describe as the "medicine-y" taste they had. Sort of like vitamins. Slim Fast bars have that kind of taste too but they're still not as good as THE Breakfast Bars. I too so wish Carnation would bring them back but I'd probably get fat off them so maybe it's for the best. LOL

Anonymous said...

These bars are awesome..I would eat them everyday for breakfast before school! How can we get them back into production? Whoever said the Pria bar is the "new" breakfast bar is mistaken...nothing can replace the carnation chocolate chip bar!! Nestle, if you read these comments, please bring these back!

pebbles said...

I agree with the above, quaker chewy dips are great and so close the the carnation bars!!!!

Anonymous said...

no no nooo... chewy is just so wrong!

Anonymous said...

*sigh* I also lived on these throughout high school and college. Nothing beat the texture and flavor...kind of dry and crumbly, not too sweet, just a bit salty. Still makes my mouth water. I wrote the company when they first disappeared from the shelves and was told they had done market research that showed consumers wanted chewy bars. Blech!!!!! Haven't eaten any sort of bar since.

Anonymous said...

....and I the same as everyone else wants those absolutely delicious chocolate chip carnation breakfast bars back. nothing is even comparable. come on carnation-everything 80's is back in style, get with the program. what in tarnation is carnation thinking? gimmeee a bar now!

Anonymous said...

BRING THEM BACKKKKK!!!!

Reed said...

If I remember correctly, they became chewy-ish and rice based, rather than the predominantly oat-based original recipe. I took quit eating them when it changed, and have never stopped craving them.

I'm pretty sure if they brought them back, all of us former kids, now well into our 30's and 40's with kids of our own, would not only buy them daily, but introduce them to our kids, their friends, etc with a fervor that would make Malcolm Gladwell proud.

Anonymous said...

I feel the same as everyone else on here!!! I grew up on these bars. They are SOOOO good. I can not eat the other breakfast bars that are out there as I have Crohn's Disease and my diet is limited. But these bars were the BEST and I would LOVE to have them back!!! SOON. PLEASE

Anonymous said...

Bring them back! Bring them back! My kids deserve to have this great experience. Chewy this and that, blah! They had the best flavor, the best texture, and were such a great compliment to a tall glass of milk. Maybe we should hit up the diary farmers of America... Maybe THEY could persuade Nestle. :-)

Kenny said...

This is insane. Like all of you, I thought I was the only one who spent the last 2 decades thinking about these things. Maybe one day they will return.

Anonymous said...

I too keep looking for the yellow box hoping Carnation breakfast bars will return in their origial form.As a kid I went through Chemo and they were the only thing I wanted to eat on bad days. Mom kept boxes on a shelf just for bad days. After treatment was over they were still part of my favorite foods. When the chewy type came out I did not like them.I do not like the other bars out there. Please bring them back!

Will England said...

Throughout the 80s my mom would buy a box or two a week of them. Since they were discontinued, I have bought maybe 10 boxes of 'food bars' total. Petition signed.

How funny that there are sooo many people who remembered these bars? I also loved them as a kid. My favorite was chocolate chip flavor. There is no other breakfast bar that has the same taste. I wish they would bring them back!! It doesnt sound like they will.

I am so amazed that other people feel the same way I do about the Carnation Breakfast Bars. I love them especially the Chocolate Chip ones. I have signed the petition.
I just wish sooooooooo much that they would bring them back !

I'm another person who really really really wants them to bring back the Carnation Instant Breakfast Bars (the chocolate-peanut butter was my favorite). Anyway, I just signed the petition and I also posted it on my Facebook page, so hopefully others will sign it too.

I absolutely loved and miss the Carnation Breakfast Bars. I was excited to find all these comments and see others who felt like me. Carnation, please bring these bars back, even if they do not agree with your marketing plan. We love them with a glass of milk. You would make so many people happy if you would sell this product again. I am 49 and I want my family to experience these bars.

Anonymous said...

Sitting down in front of the 36 inch T.V. counsel, in my pajamas, eating a carnation peanut butter crunch bar. This was the best times. I hope that one day Carnation brings back the breakfast bar in it's original recipe.

Anonymous said...

Has anyone heard anything from Nestle regarding reintroducing these bars? I have wondered about these for years and was so happy to see I'm not alone but sad to not find any encouraging info. I wrote to Nestle and will provide an update should they reply. Is the petition still available and/or has it been submitted to Nestle?

Anonymous said...

I signed the petition - #3312 - - keep 'em coming - - surely at some point carnation will bring back. Those bars are by far the best and I too wish all the time I could buy a box! Perfect for breakfast.

Anonymous said...

Chocolate chip bars got me through high school and college - when I could afford them (they were somewhat pricey,if you remember).

Also, I would imagine it would very difficult to recreate these bars at home - even if you had a complete ingredient list. The correct production process used would require cooking techniques that are only available at commercial plants. Also, the emulsifiers - what holds everything together, and provided that great dry, crumbly texture - would be difficult to duplicate at home.
Also, I recall from reading the ingredients years ago that the coating was not chocolate, but rather a chocolate substitute made from (among other things), carnuba. (If you recall, the coating on these bars didn't melt onto your hands like chocolate would have - which is why a chocolate-like substitute was used.Lessmessfor the consumer).

And yes,one of the distinctive ingredients was indeed malt.

And a pox on the houses of all the food science/marketing people that determined the public wanted "chewy" bars exclusively back in the early 1990's.

Anonymous said...

LOL... a pox on'em indeed!

Not every sweet thing should be chewy!!!

Some cookies are heaven when they're crisp, others almost powdery... and I do think we can make them at home, using old fashioned binders, and tempering the chocolate.

Anonymous said...

I thought I was the only one who still craves the Peanut Butter crunch breakfast bar. The Quaker Chewy Dips Peanut Butter is the closest thing today, but the bars must be kept no cooler than room temp, otherwise they are just crunchy granola bars.

I grew up on these bars and I always talk about them to my wife. They were the best thing going. I wish they would make them again!!

Anonymous said...

wait, wait... waiiit... are you saying that if we refrigerate those "chewy" bars they'll turn crunchy??

oooh I wish! lol (er.. heading to the store to see if there's ANY hope here...)

To Mr. Goodsell: Thank you so much for posting the box pictures! I remember this box, though my favorite flavor had the chocolate chips. Would you be so kind as to post the back of the box, with the ingredient list? (Assuming there's no legal reason you can't, of course.)
I, too, have signed the petition. It's wonderful to know my sister and I are not alone in our decades-long cravings!

Anonymous said...

I did really think I was alone in this craving too!! Now I am beginning to wonder about the addictive qualities of these things. Why is it that so many people, twenty years later are still so addicted? And why wouldn't Nestle respond to the public outcry?

THE FLAVOR I LIKE WASNT THE PEANUT BUTTER OR CHOC. CHIP THOUGH , I FORGOT WHICH IT WAS ..I THINK THE "ORIGINAL" ONES.

Oh I miss them, there is nothing out there now that compares to them. We need them back.

I can't believe people have been posting here for over three years and yet Nestle still can't get the message. Bring back those awesomely crunchy, slightly salty, dry crumbly chocolate chip bars. They were the best after-school snack ever. I have tried an endless variety of bars looking for that same combination of texture and flavor but nothing comes close.

Anonymous said...

Try "Zone Perfect" bars as a close approximate. The consistency is very close. Available at Target and other stores.

I miss them too...and have been looking for them for 20 years now (since the early 70's - oh wait, that's 40 years!) What is wrong with Carnation? They have a gold mine and are ignoring it. I can still taste them - I would have one for breakfast every morning without fail. I was addicted. I would STILL be addicted if they hadn't discontinued them. I am still hoping they will bring them back...*sigh* Signed the petition and have called the company and even written to no avail...

Look at the petition some have signed. Really think about this, you could really make some money off of us!! :)

Anonymous said...

The original ones were the absolute best! So good in fact that they were the cause of the only physical altercation I have ever been in during my 40 years on earth.

I was 12 years old in 1983, and I had an older brother who was 13. We were allowed one box per week of these, and I got home from school on a Tuesday afternoon and ate the whole damn box before I could stop myself. My brother was so shocked and angry when he found out, he put a serious beat down on me.

Painful? Yeah.

Worth it? Oh yeah!!

Anonymous said...

Chalk me up as yet another person who wondered if he was the only one to REALLY miss the breakfast bars. Like the rest of you, every once in a while I think "man, I sure wish I could have a breakfast bar right now", and I've never seen anything that is nearly as good.

Keep hope alive!

Okay, people... To the person who said the PowerBar Pria is practically the same thing as the Carnation Breakfast Bar: you obviously work for Nestle. They are NOTHING like the Carnation Breakfast Bar. Isn't if funny that when you write to the company and request that they put Breakfast Bars back on the market that they respond and try to tell you that the Pria is almost the same thing? WRONG. No bar will ever even remotely compare to the incredible awesomeness that was the Carnation Breakfast Bar. R.I.P. Breakfast Bars. I will always miss you. :'(

Anonymous said...

I'd like to know why they're so convinced that we all MUST like "chewy" gummy stickiness... there are times for that, like in, um, maybe caramels or something... but do you want gummy french fries? sticky lettuce? gooey pie-crust? No. And I don't want rubbery breakfast bars either!

Anonymous said...

your fingers open the edge of the box. you quietly slip one of the yellow foil wrapped treasures out and sneak off to some dark corner far away from parents and siblings radar. you tear the serrated edge of the wrapper to expose the succulant chocolate coating and quickly devour the thing like a fiend, never for a minute thinking - believing that the water heads at carnation would ever discontinue such a brilliant product. chimps.
it's been over thirty years and i still say they should have made 'em bigger.

Anonymous said...

LOL -- wonderfully poetic description --and so right!

Anonymous said...

As I recall it, their ingredients list showed they contained 25% of each of our daily requirements for most of the major nutrients... I remember that long list of 25's... and none of the other brands came close, more like 2 to 10%.

Why would the chimps at Nestle fixate on chewy instead of delicious and healthy??? (Carnation was only water-headed enough to get swallowed by that giant)

Anonymous said...

Oh, I thought I was the only one who remembered these delicious bars. I remember riding on the school bus with one each morning for breakfast. Please bring them back, Carnation!

so i can see for the last i dont know 5 years now alot of people have been requesting that you bring back the instant breakfast bar that i grew up with made by carnation...you obviously arent listening to the consumers ....therefore if your not gonna bring the product back that everyone loves and that the kids these days would love just as much....then release the recipe...the original recipe for all 3 bars...or better idea BRING THEM BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!! even if its just a trial....you still have instant breakfast drink still on the shelves and the bars were better than the instant breakfast drink....you dont need to add milk to eat the bars!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I, too, loved the powdery goodness that was the Carnation Breakfast Bar. Someone mentioned earlier that the bars had a chemical taste, but in a good way. I always imagined that the flavor was from zinc (not that I have any idea what zinc tastes like). Whatever it was, it had me hooked. I would love to see the actual ingredients list from a box to try to re-create the original version.

It is so amazing to see these types of blogs ongoing for as long as they have been. I too have been longing for the nutty salty goodness of these bars, I remember in the 70's a cold glass of milk and one of these after school and all was well with the world. Last night I tried the common clone recipe found in various places on the web and it is ver close, however I could not find the spanish peanuts so I opted for dry roasted. Make sure you use the almond bark type of melting chocolate for the recipe and find the spanish peanuts as it does make a difference. The Texture is dead on, the crunch is exact, however make sure after your toast the rolled oats that you run them through a food processor to granulate them a bit more. When you mic all the ingredients make sure that your items are cold as if not, the mini chocolate chips will melt into the mixture. My first batch was close but still lacked that sandy salty sweet goodness, so I will again opt for the spanish peanuts and probably add some addtional salt. But these are REALLY close. Alot of work but well worth it, considering CARNATION ( Nestle) probably has not plans to bring these back
A littel taste of history in all its sandy, crunchy, sweet goodness!
Cheers

I still think about these bars all of time. My brother and I used to fight over the boxes until finally he got a job and started buying his own and hiding them on me. What a fantastic treat it would be to bite into one of these again. Man, Carnation is really not that smart for taking these away.

Wow, just amazing how many people think about these bars. While I grew up in the 70"s, I never ate these bars until the late 80's and continued as they were discontinued a few years later. Well, I see that these postings are still going on over several years, and I still haven't seen a Carnation Breakfast Bar. Everyone's right about the substitutes: They're a far cry from the original. Anonymous said...

Wow... I'm not alone! Carnation Chocolate Chip (NOT PB choc chip - those were OK but not as good as plain ol' chocolate chip) were the best thing ever.

I wonder if the reason they won't put them back on the market is that they had a "secret" ingredient like the one in the original Coke recipe? That would certainly explain the adoration I feel for these bars, after not having had one in at least fifteen years.

Honestly, every time I walk down the cereal aisle at the store, I glance up at the "instant breakfast" section just to see whether, by some miracle, Carnation Breakfast Bars have come into the world once again. If I ever do actually see them, I will probably cry.

It's 2015 and people are still craving the ORIGINAL Carnation Breakfast Bars. Yet the manufacturer WILL NOT listen. There is something wrong with this picture. There's too much corporate analysis that decides what people will or won't buy. What ever happened to common sense?

If Nestle was smart, 2015 would be the PERFECT year to reintroduce "throwback breakfast bars" that take you "back to the 80's." Hell, partner with Universal Studios and co-brand them with the Back to the Future franchise to eat like it's 1985. THAT'S your market research right there!

Common sense dictates that if you make it, people will buy it. If they think that the market has moved on from old sluggish sales, it's only because we have no choice. Of course, we have to buy what they are presenting since we cannot buy what we want.

What we can do is vote with our pocketbooks. DON'T BUY the not-so-good bars. I don't think I've ever consumed a box of "chewy" crap. Back in the day, I consumed BB's like they were going out of style. Since they've been gone, there's just never been anything appealing in the 'bar department' so no manufacturer is getting my patronage. Not that they care about one person. But imagine if we all suddenly quit buying bars (particularly anything by Nestle or Carnation) the same way they suddenly stopped manufacturing bars. They'd do some "corporate market research" real quick to find out what the consumer wants.

They need to bring back the Carnation Breakfast Bar at least for a limited time. The only bar I ever buy is the Tiger Milk bars. The rest of the bars I don't bother buying.

Wow, I am so grateful to find this blog, my mom use to eat these all the time, and I followed her lead and ate them too, it reminds me of her SO much, she has since passed away and I just know they have these in Heaven!! :-) Big smile. Man, I miss them, I have thought about them for years too and try to recall the taste... lol that stinks bad that they stopped making them. It's so strange to hear how other people have experienced the same thing. It's like childhood memories are tied to certain foods. I miss you mom and I miss Breakfast bars!!! XO

I must have left a comment on these bars years ago but it's worth stating it again. I don't know why nothing like this still exists, and it's a shame that the parent company is even still around and could make them if they want. I will repeat, THERE IS NOTHING CLOSE OUT THERE QUITE LIKE A CARNATION INSTANT BREAKFAST BAR! I don't know what it is exactly - the crunchiness, the subtle saltiness, the taste of the thin chocolate coating - the crap out there doesn't do a true granola bar justice. PLEASE bring these back in my lifetime!

I feel as though I have found long-lost family...a group of people who miss the chocolately-goodness of the original Carnation instant breakfast bar. As a kid in the eighties, these were all that I would eat for breakfast before school. I loved them with a devotion not unlike that I have for my husband and children! I am so sad right now...all of these years that we have all been missing these bars and no response from Carnation. :(
2017, and still no sign of their return. Is there no hope?!?!?!

I had the carnatiCa breakfast bars in school just like everyone. I so miss them over the years, the other chewy bars in the stores I don't like. Nestle please bring back the 1975 original Carnation breakfast bars back to market.

I have been craving these for decades as well. Recently I tried the Zone Perfect chocolate peanut butter bar and the taste is pretty close.

Well this thread has been silent for a long time.

I too still miss the CIBB (original flavor) and would love to see them back on store shelves. Odds of that ever happening though approach zero.

I have found the Clif Builders Protein Bar in chocolate peanut butter to be a fairly close representation of the old CIBB. The texture is a bit softer in the cliff bar but the flavor profile is remarkably close. Of course I'm trying to remember what something I last ate 30-years ago tasted like, but I do believe what I'm tasting is close.

Anyway, if desperate for that old-timey CIBB, try the Clif instead.

I agree! Not the chewy ones but the original that I remember from probably late 80’s to early 90’s The original had a texture that is hard to describe but I practically lived on these. Then they switched and made them chewy. Not even close!

It’s 2024 now and still missing the Original Carnation Breakfast Bars. We would always have them during camping trips and stocked in our pantry. They’re never coming back, but I did purchase Kroger (that’s a grocery store brand in the Pacific NW that has a chocolate peanut granola bar that in my opinion is a bit similar and satisfies me. It’s yummy & if you can believe this even more tasty than what I remember CBB tasted like. But, hey I would buy cases if CBB ever came back, but alas I will settle for what I’ve found and be happy.🥰
