The Truth about Cyclamates

As a kid I remember hearing about the studies that showed that Cyclamate sweeteners caused cancer in lab rats. As an adult I now collect things that contain Cyclamates and my childhood memories of danger still sat in the back of my mind.

So today I did a quick little internet research and found that the whole cancer danger had long since been disproved. Cyclamates are now used in 55 countries including Canada although the FDA had never changed it's initial ruling. So now that specter of fear is dispelled but I doubt it will ever go away.

I'm glad we don't have to worry about cyclamates any more. Now we've just got to watch what liquids we bring to the airport. Whew!

I wonder what a packet of that tastes like now-a-days, esp. with the tasty cyclamates.

It would be cool to see a list of all the products that were pulled because of the band. I wonder if that's what happened to Cherry PEZ? It's now back and for sale in stores after a long absence!

The Wall Street Journal published an article on the sad life story of the founder of cyclamates, Michael Sveda. The corrupt sugar industry went after both cyclamates and saccharine in the 1969 pseudo-science blacklisting.

Fizzies were back, for a time anyway, with aspartame sweetener, about ten years ago. Tasted the same as the classic ones.

Does anyone know where it can be bought? I just tried to find a source, but found none?
