LA Times Festival of Books - Day 2

Day to started with the return of Mr Toast fan Maggie, decked out in her Mr Toast in Outer Space shirt. I really enjoy seeing how much people enjoy Mr Toast. Lots of other people came by including Officer Byrd, Matt and Jane, Shannon's mom Kathi, Phranc (with a copy of Krazy Kids Food!), and about a million others. The show was a total success and we should be back again next year.

LA Times Festival of Books - Day 1

I was hoping that the Festival would be busy. It was CRAZY. Just as busy as Comic Con which is saying something. We were slightly out of the way which turned out to be perfect because everyone walking by could get a good look at the booth. We ended up giving away almost 1000 Fan Club bookmarks. It was an exhasusting day but we are restocked and ready to head back on Sunday.

A big thanks to all the super cool Mr Toast fans that came by.

Can You Handle the Monster?

J. Otto Newspaper Bag

J. Otto Newspaper Bag

Our newspaper today came in a colorful plastic bag with illustrations by J Otto Seibold for the LA Times Festival of Books and the Target Ready Set Read program. It is great when cool illustrators work is used for stuff like this.

Also check out my new banner which I just painted for my booth at the Book Festival.....

Maizie & the Mountain of Toasts

My dog Maizie explores the mountain of toasts that I am getting ready for the book festival. So if you buy a Mr Toast from me and he has a couple dog hairs on him, I am not to blame.

I Am 8-Bit at Gallery 1988

Opening tonight is one of the coolest shows in Los Angeles, I Am 8-bit at Gallery 1988. In the show artists reinterperet their favorite videogame characters. I am going to go to the opening tonight and it should be quite a party with 8-bit Weapon playing. The gallery is at 7020 Melrose and the show runs til May 12th.

Hanna-Barbera Land

Who remembers Hanna-Barbera Land? Bruce Bushman was hired at some point in the late 60's or early 70's to do some concept drawings for a possible Hanna-Barbera Land. These were recently auctioned on ebay by the Howard Lowery Gallery. It is pretty amazing to see a Flintstones Freeway, a ride based around Space Ghost and even a Winsome Witch Haunted House.

Other parks may have had Hanna Barbera areas but we are yet to see a full blown HB park. Maybe someday.

The Art of Sara Varon

I love the work of Sara Varon. She lives in New York and draws robots, racoons, snowmen and turtles and other many more cool characters. Many of her stories are wordless but not to a fault. Some of the best parts of life are not filled with words, those are the special moments she captures.

Sweaterweather is great because it is filled with stories and cutouts and fun stuff. Chicken and Cat is her children's book, all about friendship and nature and life. She also does incredible printed postcards (the robot one is in metallic ink!). Look for her new graphic novel (208 pages) sometime at the end of the year. Hooray.
