I can never see those little thin wavy vertical lines without thinking of Big Daddy Roth's use of lines like that. When he drew them, they were always accompanied by flies. Kind of funny in the food context.

tripped me out to see this... This place was my first job and remember both Ed and Bob very well. Ed was married to Bob's sister and they co-owned the place. I wonder if they are still alive and how they are? This was back in 1970/1971.

I worked for mister schaffer in san bernardino for about 4 years in the late 60's and early 70's and also during that time cooked and managed glendale every sunday for a couple of years. Great place for a college kid to work and yes the chicken was the best ever.

My Mother worked there when I was little, around 1980. My family always talk about how great there chicken and gizzards was. Wish it was still around, it's hard to find any good fried chicken anymore, KFC has went down hill.

the best chicken in the world, there was a old yellow high chair in the san bernardino restaurant. my parents use to put me in,i was still going there into my 20's, the biscuits, fries, coleslaw and the crunchy crust that would fall to the bottom of the bucket,my parents would also buy me a frosted cookie when we left, we would drive from la mirada just to go there, now its just a vacant lot, i actually parked in the lot recently and remembered the good times there with my now deceased father

I am a good friend of the Schaffers. Bill owned the San bernardino store. The family lives in Newport beach area. I went to school for years with Rodger. It was a cool place back in the 70s the family is awsome. It would be nice to see one open up again.

Worked at the San Bernardino location. Really miss that place ...
If anyone knows Bill can they get the recipes? Obviously there are no plans on any stores being open anymore

From 1960 my family and I went to the Pail O Chicken on E st. in San Bernardino. Usually after church on the weekend, I was 6 at the time. I recall a lady named Lucy or Lucille worked as a server. In the mid 70's I took my wife for her first visit, she loved it. We were so disappointed when it closed. This was the best chicken you could buy, anywhere.
I think after adding there seasoning it was cooked in a cast iron skillet. Nothing better than there chicken-fries and biscut...There was 7 in my family and Lucy always had a table ready for us every weekend...
In my mid 60's now and still have not found a better tasting chicken.

Besides the buttermilk part of the recipe the thing which, to me, made it the best chicken of all time was that it was "broasted". You might have to google that.

Indeed sir... this was the best tasting chicken ever & I definitely remember that logo/bucket-pail... food and service was great back then...I was just a kid when I used to go with my Dad in San Bernardino CA. Thank you for wonderful nostalgia and memories, friend.

My family went to the one on University Avenue in Riverside. We didn’t have much money so the Pail was a big treat for us. Thanks for the memories.

Grew up in Riverside and the family would get take out from the one on University Ave next to Winchells donuts. KFC was about a mile away but Pail was much better.

Hey I’m Bill’s Grandson. I have the recipe. I’ve been debating on whether or not I should do a pop-up Pail-O-Chicken. Bill is now 94 and still cooking chicken!

Bill’s grandson here. I have the recipe, should I open a Pail-O-Chicken? Or at least a pop-up in the South Orange County area? Also for anyone wondering, Bill is now 94 and still running the show!

Hello. This was first job. I worked with your Dad and Bob. Your dad used to attend same church in Walnut. Chrust the King Lutheran church on Gartel Rd. I worked there on weekends. I used to cut over 100 chickens a day as I remember and make coleslaw and peeled shrimp and tenderized gizzards. I also soaked chicken in buttermilk and battered and fried the chicken. I loved all the food. All for a whopping $1.35 a hour. My mom would drop me off in Pomona as I didn't have a license yet. They were great bosses. I remember that place like it was yesterday. Best chicken on the planet.
