Are You Done Shopping?

It is not too late to order Mr Toast stuff for Christmas. I have Mr Toast dolls for sale on my site. And in my Etsy store I have my books, new notepads, button sets and other goodies. I just got my Shaky Bacon Christmas cards and every order from now until Christmas will include one. Happy Holidays!

Gone Astray

Years ago when I started collecting oddball stuff like cereal boxes and Funny Face, I was lucky enough to meet Steve Roden. He also had a passion for collecting similiar things and we became good friends. We went to flea markets and traveled all over the country buying collections and building an archive of kid's food packaging. The culmination of all our collecting was the publication of the book Krazy Kids Food and the creation of the online Tick Tock Toys archives.

Well since that time I have continued to add to the kids food collection but my erstwhile partner's collecting interests have gone in a much more woeful direction. Steve now collects obsolete 78rpm records and real photo postcards of old time musicians. Where he once collected things that were bright and fun, now the things he brings home are old and scratchy. To showcase these oddities he has started his own blog Airform Archives. On this blog he revels in all things archaic and antiquated. Perhaps someday I can coax him back into the light.....

Burry's Cookies

I have blogged about Burry's cookies before and I am sure I will blog about them again. Today's item of interest is an ad from Women's Day, undated but from around 1963. The box that made me buy the ad was the Gauchos. When I was a kid Gauchos were my favorite cookies, they had a peanut butter cream filling with a kind of oatmeal cookie. But the box I remember, and am still trying to find, had an elephant character. But as you can see the earlier box had a little gaucho dude as the mascot. In the late 60's all the Burry's boxes went through a redesign, the little gaucho was out and in was the more kid friendly elephant. I had always wondered about that Gauchos name and now I understood why they had that name.

As a side note, you can still buy cookies that are the same as Gauchos each year from the Girl Scouts. I think they are called Peanut Butter Sandwich or somesuch. They are exactly the same because Burry's was the original manufacturer of GS Cookies and even though the Burry company is gone the cookie continues.....

It's Been One Year

Well, today is the one year anniversary of my blog. I have to say it has been fun and I am really glad that I did it. I think the blog that inspired me to do it was Ward Jenkins' and I like to think that my blog has inspired a few other people to start their own blogs. Readership of the blog has pretty much grown continuously but special thanks have to go out to Boing Boing , Cartoon Brew, Old Man Musings and Drawn for featuring me at times and Blogger just a few weeks ago picking me as a blog of note (and for hosting my blog). Tons of other people have supported me by commenting and enjoying the blog. So a big thanks to everyone. The next year will be just as crazy with tons of new Mr Toast stuff going on and I am sure I will be finding other fun old cool stuff to post about. So stay tuned.
