Homemakers invade Disneyland

Or at least they did back in 1961 as the guests of Pillsbury's Best Flour. I am guessing this group were the winners of a Pillsbury baking contest and they got to spend a fun day at Disneyland and "enjoy" lunch at the Chicken of the Sea Pirate Ship. Good times.

On the Bookshelf

The Toybox of Glico. Another amazing book from Japan. This one is from 2002 and put out by Amus Arts Press. It details the work of designer Yuzo Kato who designed small plastic premiums for Glico candy. Each started as a beautiful tiny wood carving and is transformed into a multi-part put together plastic toy. Simple yet elegant.

Jay Ward Concept art

This group of Jay Ward concept art from the 1960's turuned up on ebay a while back. I ended up with 23 pieces (of a group of over 50 pieces) of art for possible products to be made based on Rocky and Bullwinkle. Some of the products are pretty straightforward but others like Tonic for Toddlers just seem to come out of left field. The art is done in gouache, colored pencil and collage. Quite amazing.

On My Bookshelf

I am always on the look out for new books about retro subjects and last weekend found a winner at the Virgin Megastore. Discover of Cover is a book dedicated to Japanese kids records of the 1960's. It is 154 pages almost all of which are full color and with text in Japanese. It is kind of pricey at 34.50 but well worth it. You can order it from Last Gasp. It was put out by Pie Books who also did a book about Japanese chewing gum wrappers a few years ago.

Slow Down

Marky Maypo

In 1979, Maypo reissued the Marky Maypo doll. Pretty amazing to bring him back after a 20 year absence.
