Nabisco Snaps

The other day I did a post about Burry cookies being my favorite type of cookies. Well Nabisco Snaps ran a close second. As I remember they only came in little boxes you got at the liquor store but they were the best little boxes. Such classic design. They were still making them up into the early 90's but I have not seen them since then. Bummer.

Also on the topic of Burry's stuff, I ran across a Burryland Game that was a mailaway premium. Cool map format with all the characters.

  1. I loved Chocolate Snaps. They weren't the best tasting cookies, but they were addicting. I got them at the local candy store/drugstore and the smaller supermarkets had them.

Now you've got me wanting one. ;)

  2. Wow! I consumed many of those as a kid, and I haven't thought about them in decades. I remember how appealing those boxes were when I was kid. They we're kid-sized and I liked the 'grafitti' animals. I preferred these over the Barnum Animal cookies.

And Shelly is spot-on - the chocolate snaps were kinda chalky, but it didn't matter back then.

Thanks for showing those snaps boxes. I have craving for those chocolate chip snaps now. Sigh.

ps: on a semi-related note, I recently bought a bag of the Mother's pink and white frosted animal cookies. They still taste the same to me, though like you, I can't consume them like I used to.

  3. oh man, chocolate snaps were great!!!! the chocolate chip ones were even better!!!!!!! i used to get a box everytime i went to visit my mom at work, they had them in the little snack shop in the basement of the office building. i'm sure it was the cookie cat with whiskers that kept me buying. dan you should put up the post cereal box with the oatmeal cookie face, he's gotta be related to these animals...

We must request that Nabisco put the chocolate snaps back on the shelves. My son who is currently in Iraq requested that we send some for the guys, needless to say it has been relentless to find anything. What can we do???

  11. To all, I would like all to know that Nabisco has made the famous chocolate snaps again under a new name. They are called Famous Chocolate Wafers. I was in the supermarket and walked passed them thinking they looked a lot like chocolate snaps, when I picked up the box I saw it was Nabisco and knew right than they were CHOCOLATE SNAPS. I didn't even wait to get home before I tried them, I opened them on the way out of the store.

  13. Ahhh, chocolate snaps. When I was little, my mom would sometimes put a box in my lunchbox as a special treat. Those were the greatest days. In high school (around 96) I worked at my local Shop Rite in NJ and I always strolled up the cookie aisle to see if there were any in stock. Sadly, those were the last days of chocolate snaps. I have written numerous e-mails to Nabisco, and have never gotten a response. :( I once met a woman at a party who (no doubt regretably) told me that she works for Nabisco. I begged her to invite me to her office to meet the higher-ups. She didn't. I agree with the other poster who said that the 100 cal. Oreos taste a like chocolate snaps. I have thought that as well. But still, it's not the same.

  14. I am so sad to find out that the chocolate chip snaps are gone forever. I ate so many of them as a child and teenager. They were the best!!! Shame on Nabisco for discontinuing to make these great cookies.

  15. To Anonymous who posted about the Famous Chocolate Wafers: Thank you! I found them at Shop Rite in Delaware and in NJ and they do taste just like Chocolate Snaps! I can't believe I hadn't discovered them before. They were in the cookie aisle, but it took me a minute to find them since the package is kind of small and they aren't prominently advertised. I will forever miss the Chocolate Snaps box, but the Wafers have made me very happy!

  16. Hello! I miss choclate snaps so much! I remeber being in my baby car seat, with my dad driving his '77 Camaro, and eating chocolate snaps. I had a friend who was the boss of a top Nabisco plant in NJ. What was interesting is that he said chocolate snaps were made from all the excess cookie scraps in the factory. They would add chocolate syrup and I think coconut extract to it, and voila! Choclate Snaps. Now, for something so easy, and the cheapest cookie to make, why stop making them? Anyway, for the first time since, I have found a cookis that tastes the closest to a chocolate snap since. It is teh new Nabisco Barnum's Animal Choco Crackers 100 Calorie Packs. And of course, you do not get much. You get 6 little (not even 1 oz!) packs that cost you anywhere between $2.50 and $3.50 a box! BUt it is worth it. (and I bet they make them out of scraps too!) Let me know if you think the same!

Chocolate Snaps were the best dunker cookie ever made.Everyone should fill out a nabisco response form and tell them to start up the Snaps machine again. Chocolate Wafers have been around for a while, but they're too thin and too large for dunking repeatedly. They're usually pretty spendy too. They make a mean ice cream sandwich with some vanilla ice cream though.mmmm

Chocolate Snaps were/are great and addictive! As far as I can tell, Famous Chocolate Wafers are the same thing now. But they are not on the cookie aisle where I live. They are only with the ice cream toppings. Have liked them since I was a kid, and I'm 47 now. I bought some last night. One pack was $4.50 with the tax! But I had to have them. I had a craving for them after someone was eating some sort of new diet-type chocolate wafer that wasn't in the same class. They should put them back in the old packaging with the Chocolate Snaps name. Now, if they would bring back Tid-Bits! And change Nilla Wafers back to the original recipe!

I have found the Nabisco Chocolate Snaps that have been redesigned and repackaged by Nabisco! I was at a restaurant and a chocolate wafer was put as a finishing touch on my chocolate mouse. I had said to the waiter that I would leave him a hefty tip if he would go the chef and get the name of the wafer on my dessert. He came out with a to go box full of them and I said to him thanks but I need the name. He came out with a long, narrow yellow box and the name on the side was FAMOUS Chocolate Wafers by Nabisco and I knew that the taste of these wafers were actually the Chocolate Snaps I used to eat as a kid. You could find them on the Internet but I actually found them today at my local grocery store in Florida. Find them, buy them, eat them because you will absolutely love them!!!!!

  24. Sorry for those Fellow Chocolate Snap lovers that have blogged here saying they are exactly the same as Nabiscos Wafers - while I have those at the ready in my cabinet for that famous dessert roll made from the Wafers - a quick read of the ingredients list will show they can't be!
No mention of that hint of coconut in the Snaps -while we are forced to settle - maybe a good source - check out 100 caloris pak Chocolate Animal cookies but still no coconut but close crisp cookie

  25. We were just longing for some of those delicious chocolate snaps. They were hard to find but we used to get them from a 'mom and pop' store in Washington DC years ago. I, too, wish that Nabisco would bring them back. They were yummy!
