Mmmm....those toaster pizzas bring back memories. Do you remember Buitoni's toaster pizza? They were roundish thin pizzas completely enclosed by crust and with all the fixin's in the center. The first bite always burned the roof of your mouth, but they were delicious (or at least they were to me when I was 10 years old)!
I had what I consider a standard Kentucky suburban upbringing in the 60s. My wife grew up in Los Angeles, and in food terms, she is far more worldly than I am. She knows this, and asks me from time to time when was the first time I had pizza or a burrito, an egg roll or some other "exotic" food item. I tell her I never had a restaurant pizza until I was possibly 20. My mom always bought the Chef Boyardee Pizza kit in a box, mixed the dough that came in a pouch, set it aside to rise while the oven fired up. Then we spread the canned ingredients on it. It was VERY thin crust (although they didn't call it thin crust - we were just trying to make it go far). I had my first burrito when I was about 14, I guess.
I tell her a story about my grandparents' first time eating Mexican. We bought a bag of Mexican fast food (not long after it had come to the area) and brought it home while my grandparents were visiting for a few days. They grabbed burritos, unrolled the paper, and just kept unrolling. They unrolled the burrito, and sat gazing for a few seconds at a bunch of mashed beans. We thought this was so funny, even though a year before, we could have made the same sort of mistake ourselves.
In the 60s, foods like yogurt, any Chinese food other than canned Chung King Chow Mein, and any Mexican foods were unknown to us. I think it was around 1969-73 that things were slowly changing to the point that most Kentucky kids would know what ethnic foods were like.
By the way, I don't know how long you've lived in L.A., but my wife says the best little fast food chain they had when she was a kid there in the 60s and 70s, was Pup N' Taco.
I've been searching for those for years - I loved those Buitoni toaster pizzas. Go through a box of those as a kid - a whole science on heating the inside sufficiently and not burning the outside....I really wish they would make these again. You can find Quisp, but not Buitoni Toaster Pizza!
I love those buitoni pizzas so much!!!! Please make them again.. they were the best and I am 47 yrs old and still one of my favorite snacks, and I would love my daughter to experience those wonderful lil pizzas it would be a great snack for when the kids come over, what a shame they dont make them any more.. they were reallly unbelievabley GOOD!!!!
my boyfriend loved those toaster pizza he probably went through a box every other day of not every day. i have not found anything in all these years that compares to those pizza. i wrote to buitoni maybe if they get enough ppl asking for them they will make them again. in the mean time what is quisp and where to they sell them?
I loved those things... and was just thinking about them and did a Search... that's how I found this board. If they are still around...I could do a whole box. Remember how they'd be cold in the middle...but burnt the roof of your mouth at the same time
I LOVED those little round pizzas! I can still taste the cool filling... I haven't had one in years. Evey now and again I look for them in the freezer section to no avail.... :(

ReplyDeleteI remember my grandmother and great grandmother making these for me. I freakin' loved these things! No microwave ovens back then. Those were the days.
