I am hard at work on my new book proposal and writing a lot of new gags and jokes and the above gag came out of my mind. It is a pretty obscure refernce to an incident at the UN when Nikita Khrushchev took off his shoe and banged it on the table to make a point to the general assembly. At another time he made the statement "We will bury you", also I believe at the UN, and directed towards the americans. So that is the background of the gag (and for anyone wondering Joe is not a communist). As much as I think it is incredibly funny, I think it is a bit too obtuse to use to convince a publisher to publish my book. Ah, back to the drawing board....
Thanks for the laugh-out-loud moment. I'm sure my co-workers are all curious about what I find so funny.
ReplyDeleteI love this, though I could see why a publisher might find it too obscure. I just love that Joe has those oversized (for him) shoes! And the way Toast is sorta watching him from a safe distance.
There are SO many possibilities for a series of these panels...
Nice work, and thanks!
Chris
that's awesome!
ReplyDeletePerfect!
ReplyDeleteAnything with Khrushchev is always funny!....;)
ReplyDeletecall me a history geek, but it's not too obscure at all... kruschev's shoe stunt was one of the most famous moments of the cold war.
ReplyDeleteI got it right away. I don't think it's too obscure at all.
ReplyDeletewell maybe I will have to reconsider its inclusion....
ReplyDeleteI think I recall first hearing this story in High School American history in Ohio.
ReplyDeleteI think the Perdicaris Kidnapping is obscure...but impossible to cartoon.
I don't know what you could draw that could be as instantly recognized as the Khrushchev shoe speech.
Either way, it's a funny cartoon. Maybe "obscure" wasn't the perfect adjective choice. No big whoop.
with my comics I try to appeal to ages 5-99 - some comics are funny even if you don't understand the reference - in the case of this one you have to be in on it for it to be funny so for now it is gotten bumped
ReplyDeleteIt's very gettable although the shoe-banging and his "we will bury you" quip were two different incidents that happened four years apart. The shoe came off in New York at the United Nations General Assembly in 1960; he said "We will bury you" at a reception in Moscow in 1956.
ReplyDeleteOooo that anonymous guy is super smart! I despise losers who critique under a guise.
ReplyDeleteI'm "anonymous" because I don't have a blogger account! I'm Dave Hall and live in Virginia.
ReplyDeleteok enough already - it is just a stupid gag and I have plenty more
ReplyDeleteI'm a little late but I just stumbled upon this a few days ago and it basically made my life better in every way.
ReplyDeleteyes, very funny and i dont think it is "obscure" at all like the guy above me found this today working on a project for school.
